The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 1% for the week-ended
November 29, 2019. For the month of November, the Index was up 3.4%. The index
closed Friday's session at 3,140.98, up from last week's closing level of
3,110.29.
The consumer-discretionary sector had the largest percentage
gain of the week, up 1.8%. The technology sector had the next-largest gain, up
1.7%. Just two sectors were down for the week: energy, off 1.5%, and utilities,
down 0.03%.
Earlier in the week, new data on household spending and orders
for long-lasting factory goods suggested the U.S. economy is heading into the
holiday season on solid ground. The government also reported the economy expanded
at a slightly better pace than initially estimated in the third quarter.
Week
Ahead
Next
week the US jobs report will be keenly watched, alongside ISM PMIs, foreign
trade balance, construction spending, factory orders and the preliminary
estimate of Michigan consumer sentiment.
The
US will be publishing its highly anticipated jobs report, with market forecasts
pointing to a payroll increase of 183 thousand in November, after a
larger-than-expected 128 thousand rise last month.
